Olivia Lockhart

16 Lighthouse Road

Cedar Cove, Washington

Dear Reader,

You don't know me yet, but in a few hours that's going to change. You see, I'm inviting you to my home and my town of Cedar Cove because I want you to meet my family, friends and neighbors. Come and hear their stories--maybe even their secrets!

I have to admit that my own secrets are pretty open. My marriage failed some years ago, and I have a rather...difficult relationship with my daughter, Justine. Then there's my mother, Charlotte, who has plenty of opinions and is "always" willing to share them.

Here's an example I'm a family court judge and she likes to drop in on my courtroom. Recently I was hearing a divorce petition.

In Charlotte's view, young Cecilia and Ian Randall hadn't tried hard enough to make their marriage work--and I agreed. So I rendered my judgment Divorce Denied.

Well, you wouldn't believe the reaction! Thanks to an article by Jack Griffin, the editor of our local paper (and a man I wouldn't mind seeing more of!), "everyone's" talking.

Cedar Cove--people love it and sometimes they leave it, but they never forget it!

See you soon...

"Olivia"

This was my first Debbie Macomber novel in the Cedar Cove series, and is the first in the Cedar Cove series. I hope to be able to purchase the remaining novels in the series. She's a very good writer, and her characters were varied and all of them quite interesting, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be Charlotte Jefferson with Justine, Judge Olivia Lockhart's, daughter, following a close second. I kept wanting to pinch Justine's head off, but I hung on to the hope that she would make the right choice in the end. And no, I won't spoil it by telling you which choice she made.

Grace Sherman, Olivia's best friend, plays a large part in the storyline. Her relationship with her daughters, Maryellen and Kelly, was interesting. Although the two girls disagreed with the right choice for Grace to make when her husband and their father, Dan, disappeared, they still supported one another.

This novel left me with a satisfied feeling that all was well in Cedar Cove!

And now I have to tell you that the reason I chose this book to read, silly though it may sound. I am fascinated with Lighthouses, and have a pretty large collection of them, including large and small figures, paintings, pictures, and yes, even a Lighthouse Encyclopedia, complete with photos and histories of actual lighthouses from all over the world.

There were plenty of twists and turns! Family issues, lies and secrets. I liked all the characters had something to hide and then some. This writer explained everyone 's problems in detail. The setting was in my favorite place, Seattle. Great book enjoyed and couldn't wait for the results for each one in the book! Cecelia learned about losing something precious but found love again and to forgiving. Justin threw money and riches for real love! Grace became humble and found out more about herself after a 35 year marriage had. It was a great book📖👏
In the small town of Cedar Cove, Washington, there are very few secrets. Judge Olivia Lockhart has gone through loss of a son and divorce many years ago. She can relate to another couple who lost a child and stand in front of her seeking divorce. Denied!! This is a remarkable story of rebuilding futures together or standing tall and facing each day with strength. This story is awesome, filled with emotion, and it shares many stories of neighbors and relatives of the judge. A great story which I highly recommend.
Debbie Macomber once said, “feed your faith and your doubts will starve to death.” (Macomber, 249) I have read a couple of her books and am now starting to realize that the way she builds her characters throughout the book is a really great reflection of this quote. One thing I really love about her books is they fill you with joy and hope as you turn each page. I feel like there is a lesson within each chapter that makes you think and wonder about how the characters are going to find this lesson and it is really intriguing.
16 Lighthouse Road is is the first book in the Cedar Cove series. The whole book revolves around the life of Olivia Lockhart and the people that are most important in her life. As a family-court judge, Olivia has to deal with a lot of divorce cases but recently a young couple, who are well known within the community of Cedar Cove, find themselves standing next to their attorneys in court. Olivia finds this case a bit peculiar because a year before their marriage they signed a prenuptial agreement which stated that their marriage would last a lifetime.
Olivia believes that their marriage might still be intact if it wasn’t for the tragic loss of their infant daughter, Allison. Olivia also believes that this is no reason to end a marriage seeing as she lost her son a few years back and that was the reason her marriage ended as well.
Sensing the love that Cecilia and Ian still have for eachother, Olivia decided to make her decision using her heart and not her head. She then denies their petition for divorce. Little does she know that this news will soon be all over town.
The newspaper had just recently hired a new editor for the chronicle. This editor has made it his mission to make the weekly newspaper more important and more engaging for the citizens of Cedar Cove. Olivia was unaware of Jack Griffin’s ambition and apparently didn’t recognize his face in the courtroom either.
The next morning Olivia sees that her decision made the headline of the column and actually enjoyed reading his perspective on her decision. Over the next couple of weeks Jack and Olivia fall into a relationship while Cecilia and Ian try to repair their marriage.
Although things seem to being going great in Olivia's relationship, her daughter Justine is faced with a tough decision. Should she marry a man whom she doesn’t love in order to be financially secure or allow herself to fall for her high school lover. Meanwhile, Olivia’s mother befriends a stroke patient who hides a secret that he might share, if only he could speak.
While Olivia tries to help everybody who is closest to her solve their problems, she finds herself relying on Jack to provide her with advice when everyone in her life seems to be losing hope.
As her best friends marriage begins to fall apart she is now reflecting on the years that she was married to her ex-husband Stanley. She thinks about her son’s tragic death and realizes that she understands what Cecilia and Ian are going through, but has hope that they can work through the problems.
I really enjoyed reading this book and engaging with the characters’ past and their stories that the author illustrates so beautifully and with so much detail. One of the things I really love about Debbie Macomber’s writing is that she does a really great job of pulling you out of reality and placing you into the characters lives through her writing.
The character development throughout her books is astonishing to me. She does such a great job at creating an emotional connection between the character and the readers. Her books are amazing romance novels that include just enough fiction so that you can still relate what the characters are going through to your own life. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an escape from everyday life.
The continuing theme throughout this book is definitely perseverance. This book teaches you that even when times get hard and you feel like there is nothing left for you to make things better, things will always get better. With the people that love you by your side, nothing is impossible.
There are a lot of historical events that occur throughout this book. The book takes place during world war 2 and so there is a lot of drama going on throughout the book just based off of that aspect. Cecilia’s husband Ian was deployed when she gave birth to their daughter Allison and in addition to that he was still deployed when they lost their child as well.
I find this interesting because I was researching more about what was taking place in the lives of the women whose husbands were deployed I discovered that a lot of women experienced the things that Cecilia went through while Ian was deployed. I feel like this is an important aspect to have in books like these because people can really connect with the characters emotions and they understand what they are going through.
Another historical event that took place within this book was the first time the Mt.Helena erupted. This was probably about half way through when the main character Olivia was telling a story about a memory she had from a couple of years ago. She was talking about how they were in Washington with her ex-husband and her 3 children. They were driving back to Cedar Cove when suddenly everything stopped.
I feel like it is really cool that the author tried to incorporate all of these historical events into a fiction novel because although the characters lives are “fake” these events gives the story an aspect of reality.
I really enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to start reading the 2nd book in the series, 204 Rosewood Lane. Debbie Macomber does a really great job of adding a sense of reality to fictional stories and I think that it is important to have an aspect of reality in a fictional story because it allows your audience to be able to connect with the stories and the character more. Overall I thought this was a really good book and I was really engaged in the characters and the story.
Cliff-hanger series? Several characters are woven together and easily followed. Interesting dialogue. There are sad, emotional happenings but not drag-you-down drama.

What happened to the missing husband?
What happened with the grandfather's possessions and his grandson?

No interest in re-reading this story. I may be interested in this series if it is bundled or available via the library.
I am always interested in works by this author.
