Loved this book; it wasn't anything like I thought it would be, and that's a good thing. It wasn't predictable at all, and the end will really surprise you. Total twist on the "vampire" stories. The characters were complex, you got involved with them, and wanted to see what happens in their story line. I can't wait for the sequel.Product details

What a terrific twist on the vampire story. Full of the richness of the modern world against the old world of Transylvania. The characters come alive in a story that takes you through a litany of emotions. Fun read that will keep you guessing.
What I enjoyed about this book was the leaps in time, the flashbacks, and the powerful images in a variety of chapters. Most are familiar with the typical vampire tropes - who isn't, right? - but the author's novel takes us on more of an emotional journey between Leo and his dead wife Maria, and then weaves the vampire lore Around the relationship. Highly recommended. For fear of being sycophantic (but I guess I am too late on that score) - give this novel a few chapters and you will be hooked.
Leo Sabov imagined no nightmare worse than losing his wife, Maria. Not until after her death in L.A., when he brought her body home to Transylvania to be buried. And when he finds a tradition of setting a bottle of pălincă in with her body and exchanges it for a bottle of water, does he learn the truth of why his wife could never get pregnant. For what he did has terrible consequences that the small village had worked hard to eradicate long ago when Romania was under Communism and Maria was a child. For Romania is where the legends of the vampire have been told, but it appears they are not fairy tales.
A unique twist on the vampire story, with even a surprise for me at the end of the book. If you are tired of the same after same vampire books out there, this one is just what the doctor ordered.

This take on vampire lore juxtaposes horror and love. Not love as in the allure of, or attraction to, a vampire but deep love between two people facing internal and external demons. Both thoughtful and disturbing, it's a compelling read.
